There are many tools that you can utilize to keep away from smoking and one of those includes keeping busy and distracted.
Such distraction methods include:
· Keeping extremely busy on the first day of quitting, such as going to a movie, exercising, talking long walks, bike riding, or anything that does not require you to be in the presence of smoke or cigarettes.
· Go to places that do not allow smoking like a cinema, museum, department stores, libraries and places of worship.
· Now is a great time to join a gym, if you aren’t already a member, which will not only help in keeping you busy; but, will also help you with one of the symptoms in some individuals who quit smoking, weight gain.
· If you miss holding a cigarette physically in your hand, try holding something else like a pencil, paper clip, marble, water bottle or stress ball.
· If you miss having something in your mouth, then try something like a toothpick, cinnamon stick, lollipop, hard candy, sugarfree gum, carrot sticks, cheese sticks (like those you find kids eating), celery sticks. Whatever you choose, make sure it is healthy.
· Above all else, drink plenty of water and fruit juice and stay away from drinks like wine and beer as these are smoking triggers.
Stay away from temptations by going for a walk if you have the urge to smoke and stay away from things that you connect with smoking. For instance if you smoked in your car to a certain radio station, think about changing to a different station, or, if you can, take the bus or train for a while. Basically, do everything to stay away from the desire to smoke.
If you go to places that don’t allow smoking and keep doing that for a while every time you have an urge to smoke, you will soon train your mind and your body away from the urges. Remember, not everyone smokes and there are a lot more non-smokers out there. You may even find you may make new friends and find new activities that are far more healthier.
